Installation
Below is a guide to help you install your cross appropriately.
You will need
- Spade
- Fork
- Spirit level
- Mattock (if the top soil is tough)
- Post mix (optional)
- Prepare the installation area; ideally the soil should be moist before you begin.
Dig a Hole
Use a spade or fork to dig a hole approximately 40cm-50cm deep to accommodate the cross.
Ensure Alignment
Place the cross into the hole and use a spirit level to check that it is vertical on both axes. Adjust the soil around the base until the cross stands straight and steady.
Optional Post-mix
For extra stability, particularly in soft or exposed ground, add post-mix around the base of the cross following the manufacturer's instructions, then leave it to set.
Back-fill and Firm
Back-fill the hole with soil, firming it down in layers around the base of the cross to ensure it is well supported.
Dos & Don'ts
Do
- Do choose a location with firm, well-drained ground for installation.
- Do use a spirit level to make sure the cross is vertical before back-filling.
- Do firm the soil around the base in layers so the cross is well supported.
- Do keep the cross clean by gently wiping it with a soft, damp cloth as needed.
- Do inspect the cross occasionally for any wear or movement, especially after extreme weather.
- Do re-apply a clear water-based exterior satin wood varnish (preferably with a UV inhibitor) after the first year to maintain the protective coating.
- Do contact us if you have any concerns about installation or long-term care; we are happy to help.
Don't
- Avoid hitting the cross with a hammer or heavy object.
After Care
Our oak crosses are durable, weather-proof and resilient. The coating we use will prevent the wood from peeling or flaking by protecting against weather such as rain, frost, snow and sunshine. After one year, you can top up the protective layer with a clear water-based exterior satin wood varnish (preferably with a UV inhibitor).
